Octopus Research Group

The Octopus Research Group (ORG) is housed in the Reality Studio, part of the Reality Lab, Paul G Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering. The group's mission is to develop systems for testing the human ability to interface with this alternative species, the Giant Pacific Octopus which is local to the area. Some of the questions the group is pursuing include: Can humans remap sensory-motor skills to control limbs equipped with the controls system of the octopus? Can we exploit the octopus' existing control strategies to intuitively transform information across the human-technology interface? Can the octopus' strategies of distributed control be implemented in motor rehabilitation and the development of neuroprosthetics? The researchers in the group hail from many different departments and schools on the UW campus.
